A Twitch streamer's supporter was deeply embarrassed after discovering that he had been deceived by a bogus account when she disclosed the truth.
A Twitch attendee at TheNicoleT's TwitchCon meet-and-greet was left dismayed upon discovering that the individual they had conversed with on X wasn't actually the streamer.
The prevalence of fake accounts on the internet remains a persistent issue, and one fan faced the harsh reality of it at TwitchCon.
Similar to many streamers, TheNicoleT organized a meet-and-greet at the Las Vegas event to connect with fans personally, providing an opportunity for face-to-face interaction and answering questions beyond what's typically discussed on stream.
During the event, a viewer approached, offering a hug to TheNicoleT and initiating a discussion about their prior interactions on X, only to receive disheartening news.
Following the embrace, the viewer expressed concerns about their conversations, displaying a chat log on their tablet and voicing uncertainty about the authenticity of the exchange. "We've conversed here on Twitter, and I've been a bit paranoid, doubting if it's really you," the viewer mentioned, seeking confirmation.
TheNicoleT investigated the account in question and regretfully disclosed that the person the viewer interacted with was indeed a catfish, shattering the viewer's hopes. The viewer's shocked reaction was evident as their mouth fell agape in disbelief.
Fortunately, the viewer revealed that their conversations with the catfish hadn't taken a negative turn. However, the VOD recording of the interactions had been deleted, leaving the outcome of their subsequent in-person conversation uncertain.
Unfortunately, the proliferation of fake accounts is anticipated to worsen with the advancement of AI technology. In an interview with Dexerto, Catfish's Nev Schulman cautioned about the potential of deepfakes enabling malicious users to "fabricate a human being."
